As much as we love taking our furry friends out to the park or playing fetch in the yard, sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate. Inclement weather can force us to stay indoors, leaving our energetic pups with excess energy to burn. But what can you do to satisfy those begging puppy eyes?

But fear not! There are plenty of entertaining games you can play with your dog right in the comfort of your own home when the weather is less than welcoming like the five below!

5 Games to Enjoy with Your Dog

HIDE-AND-SEEK

This classic game isn’t just for kids! Dogs love the thrill of the hunt, so hiding treats or toys around the house and encouraging your pup to find them is a great way to keep them mentally stimulated. Start with easy hiding spots and gradually increase the difficulty as your dog gets better at the game.

FETCH

Think you need a huge backyard to play fetch? Many dogs are perfectly happy to play this game indoors, especially if you have a long hallway or a spacious living room. Just make sure to use soft toys or balls specifically designed for indoor use to avoid any damage to your home.

TUG-OF-WAR

A game of tug-of-war can be a great way to bond with your dog while also giving them (and yourself) a good workout! Make sure to use a sturdy rope or toy designed specifically for this game to prevent any accidents. Remember to let your dog win occasionally to keep them engaged and excited to play. (This game is also a great way to reinforce the “leave it” command! )

OBSTACLE COURSE

Get creative and set up a makeshift obstacle course using household items like chairs, ottomans, boxes, and blankets (use your imagination!). Challenge your dog to navigate through the course, rewarding them with treats or praise each time they complete an obstacle. Not only is this game fun, but it also helps improve your dog’s agility, coordination and problem-solving skills.

One rainy Saturday afternoon feisty Raider, a cattle dog boarder, was feeling particularly restless. With the raindrops drumming against the windows, our usual outdoor activities were out of the question. Determined to keep him entertained, I got creative.

Using pillows, cushions, and a few cardboard boxes, I constructed a series of hurdles and tunnels for Raider to navigate. At first, he was a bit confused, but once he realized it was a game, his tail started wagging furiously with excitement! With time, his confidence grew and he was eager to tackle the course.

By the time we finished, we were tired! As we cuddled on the couch, I couldn’t stop smiling at Raider, a tired but happy pup! (A tired dog is a happy dog, right?)

INTERACTIVE TOYS

There are plenty of enrichment toys on the market designed to keep dogs entertained and engaged, even when they’re stuck indoors. Puzzle toys that dispense treats or require your dog to solve a problem are a great way to challenge their mind and alleviate boredom.

Conclusion

Indoor games can be a fantastic way to keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated, even when you’re stuck inside! Whether it’s hide-and-seek, an engaging interactive toy with tasty rewards or some quick training disguised as a game, the most important thing is to have fun and bond with your furry friend while making wonderful memories together.

So the next time the weather keeps you indoors, grab some toys, get creative, and let the games begin!
