Unwanted and uninvited pests can pose serious threats to your pet's health if left unchecked! Learn how to effectively and safely control pets in your home and yard!

As a pet parent, you’re constantly battling to keep your furry friend safe from all sorts of dangers – chocolate and other foods, toxic plants, and, of course, the dreaded vacuum cleaner! But have you ever thought about the tiny, creepy-crawly threats lurking in your home and backyard? That’s right, we’re talking about pests and insects! Unwanted pests like:

    • Ants.
    • Flies.
    • Moths.
    • Earwigs.
    • Spiders and more.

These uninvited guests don’t just give you the heebie-jeebies; they can also pose serious risks to your pet’s health. Below are some tips on effective pest control while keeping your pets safe! (Source: American Veterinary Medical Association)

Tip 1: Choose Pet-Friendly Pest Control

When dealing with pests, your first instinct might be to grab the nearest spray can and douse the problem into oblivion. But remember, what’s toxic to pests can also harm your pets through:

    • Inhaling through their nose.
    • Absorbing through their skin.
    • Or ingesting!

Many conventional pesticides contain chemicals that can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, or worse if ingested by your pet. Always read labels carefully, and consult with your vet or a pest control professional when in doubt.

Opt for pet-safe alternatives instead.

  • Products containing essential oils can effectively repel and kill insects while being safe for pets, such as:
    • Peppermint.
    • Cedarwood.
    • Lemongrass.
    • Rosemary.
    • Geranium Oil.
      Lavender.
    • Lemon Balm.
  • A spray bottle of vinegar and water is a safe and natural ant-repellent.
  • Use plant-powered products to kill, prevent, and repel pests like Wondercide.

Tip 2: Know Your Pets

Not all pests are created equal, and neither are the risks they pose to your pets.

For instance:

    • Fleas and ticks can transmit diseases.
    • Spiders and bees can cause painful bites or stings.
    • Rodents may carry parasites and leave behind hazardous droppings.

Also, not all pests live everywhere! Please educate yourself on your area’s common pests and their potential dangers. Then, you can tailor your pest control efforts to effectively and safely protect your pets.

Tip 3: Secure Your Home and Yard

Preventing pests from entering your home is half the battle. Thoroughly seal any cracks or gaps in your home’s foundation, windows, and doors to keep out insects and rodents. Keep your yard clean by regularly mowing the lawn, trimming bushes, and removing ALL standing water where pests like mosquitoes love to breed.

Also, consider planting pet-safe plants that pests hate! Not only are they aromatic, they control bugs (and you can even add some to your cooking!), including:

    • Basil.
    • Rosemary.
    • Lemon Balm.
    • Catnip.
    • Peppermint.
    • Lavender.

Pest control doesn’t have to be a nightmare! You can keep your home, yard, and pets safe by choosing pet-friendly products, understanding the specific pests you’re dealing with, and properly planning and using preventative measures.
